The above quote is good – but it won’t really apply to my marketing as for this first book I don’t expect to get it into retail stores. Major publishers on the other hand with book catalogs that go out regularly to stores will have the book cover and back copy done before the book is done so they can meet this deadline.
For my books I have followed this a little bit in that the book cover is one of the first things that I get done. In some cases when I first get the idea for the book!
With the book I am doing now I had a rough draft completely written before I went into “Book Cover Mode.” For the first time I went with 99 Designs and held a contest to find the best cover. I wanted my cover to be the best of the best so I put the last bit of money I had for this book into that. I sponsored the contest for $800.
I know that is a lot for a self-published cover. But the cover makes or breaks the book and since this is my first jump off into the world of fiction – I feel it is a good move. Other authors have sponsored contests for much less and still got amazing covers though and perhaps next time I would do one for $500. Not sure.
BUT – when all was said I done I got the cover of my dreams. I totally love it and feel happy with my decision. Once I had the cover I started immediately using it on the website for the book and on the headers for all my Social Media places.
A great book cover not only fuels the imagination for potential readers it is a huge lift for positive imaging of the whole book project for the author. Once it is in place the project becomes real! So even if you don’t plan to have your book distributed through major retail outlets – it is still important to announce the books coming five to six months ahead of time.
