Making sure that your book is categorized correctly will improve sales. It will do this because people looks for books by category. The narrower you can break down the category your book falls into the more likely you are to match a new reader with your book.
It’s a matter of process. You start with two categories. Fiction and Nonfiction. Then depending what you choose you break it down again and again and again until you finally hit the root of the category that most closely matches your book.
If your book category is too large it will be hard to rank high enough for it to be noticed. Most people will not look beyond two or three pages in a search. So you need to get your book into a place where it ranks high enough to be seen.
A great article by M. Louise Locke that goes into more depth about this when putting a book on Kindle is here.
