One of the first things that John recommends is creating a list of 100 contacts of key media and marketing contacts for marketing your book. He calls it the Kremer 100 List.
Basically it means you create this list and then connect with these people at least once a month. Connecting can be as simple as sending a tweet, leaving a comment on their blog, or more daring send an email, call on the phone or meet in person.
I started one a few months ago using Excel. But it hasn’t been that practical for actual use. So I decided I would try and find a free online contact management program and see if that would work better.
The first one I tried was quite complicated. I wanted something simple. I found HighRise which allows me to have 250 contacts for free. Since I am just working on my 100 contacts – this is a good fit.
The first contact I put on my list of course was John Kremer.
The thing to know about creating this list is that it is not as easy as it looks. Not only does it take time to actually figure out WHO you want to put on your list it takes time to find contact information. Then you have to input that information into your list which always seems like it takes more time than it should.
The most important piece which I have never done – is doing the actual contacting in a systematic, strategic way. It’s pretty much been hit and miss with me. I figure this is something that if I was actually getting mentored by John Kremer he would want me to do. So – I’m going to do it.
I really believe it is so important that when I actually do find a new contact to add I will include it as one of my 1-5 marketing things to check off for that day. Not that I will do this every day – I just mean it will count as a marketing action when I do.
Starting off these are the people I am on the search for.
- Local media that might cover my book
- PR people –
- Bloggers who have large followings that reach my target audience
- Twitter’s who have large followings that reach my target audience
- Facebook users who have large followings that reach my target audience
Starting off I have just that one “John Kremer” contact. As I add more I will share my progress on the daily updates. I thought about sharing my actual contacts but I think that might be a bit weird? Not sure. Will see how it goes. I know I would love to see the 100 Kremer list of other authors who are reaching out to Children book buyers but on the other hand do I want the people I want to connect with “know” I am on a strategic battle plan to become friends with them?
Sounds tacky doesn’t it?
